Currency Ireland

The currency of Ireland in the present days includes two types of currencies, namely the pound sterling and the Irish punt. The record shows that in the Pre Christian era, slaves and cattle were a customary medium of large exchanges. In case of smaller exchanges, inhabitants regularly used tools and ornaments. According to Irish history, down the ages gold and gold plated rings had become a main medium exchange. In the northern part of Ireland, the pound sterling is used as the standard currency of Ireland with individual notes, whereas the currency in Southern Ireland is the Irish Punt.Calculation states that sometimes the punt fluctuates and it is rated at 15 to 20 % more than the sterling. In some cases, the estimation of the punt shows the
denomination as 15 to 20% less than the sterling. The punt is usually less strong in valuation than sterling.

In the southern part of Ireland, retail businessmen from the north can issue sterling notes. In some places in Ireland, currency exchange rates are offered, whereas some local business in the south simply accepts sterling value as the denomination of punts. Businessmen cannot issue coins as these are not readily accepted. If you are here for business purpose or on your excursion, you can use the sterling in Southern Ireland but it costs you more than punts.

The currency of Ireland namely the sterling is issued from all the major banks of the northern parts of this nation. Sometimes, it creates confusion for visitors as English notes are also in circulation in the Irish market. Do not worry, as you can issue your sterling notes from Ulster Bank, Northern Bank, Sterling Bank of Ireland as well as Scottish Bank. The travelers from England need to change their notes from the Bank of England before coming to this country. Usually, southern punts are not accepted in most parts of Northern Ireland.

The Currency Commission was created in the year of 1927 by the Currency Act. It was created as part of the policy of the Irish Free State to put the 'Saorstát pound' in public use. The Currency Commission also licensed the Series of 'A' Banknotes through the recommendation of an advisory commission.
