Climate of France

The Climate of France is usually of four different types - the oceanic, continental, temperate and Mediterranean. As a result of so many variations, it is difficult to confine the climate of France into a single category. The mountains which form a considerable part of the topography have a major influence on the French weather. France is located in Western Europe and the hexagonal stretch of the territory extends from the Mediterranean to the English Channel and Rhine and the North Sea.

The characteristic features of the Climate of France can be broadly classed into the following:

1. South-west France, comprising the areas of Aquitaine and Poitou-Charente, also has gentle winters and warm to hot summers, with considerably less rainfall compared to the northern part of the country.
Thunderstorms are widespread during the summer months. The south of France has a coastal Mediterranean climate with equable weather. This is one of the reasons that this region has become one of the most visited zones of the country.

2. The northern coastal regions have a temperate climate with mild winters and warm summers. The density of rainfall is moderate all through the year, and the weather can become extremely erratic.

3. The Mountains - especially the Alps, the Massif Central and the Pyrenees are featured by long and cold winters with substantial snowfall, that often do not clear from the high roads until late spring.

4. The Mediterranean coastal areas of Provence, Languedoc Roussillon and Corsica experience a typical Mediterranean climate. The chief features are a hot summer, and mild and short winters. This region of France has the most days of sunshine every year. The Mistral, a strong northerly wind, blows over the region, and sometimes results in cold spells of windy weather until late spring. Thunderstorms are common during summer.

5. The Climate of France in the central and inland areas is continental. The weather here is characterized with hotter summers, harsher winters, and less rainfall. The southern part of the country is significantly drier and warmer than the northern.
