Population Austria

The population of Austria is approximately 8 million. Vienna, the capital city is the home to a major percentage of total population. About twenty percent of the total population consisting roughly of 154 million people lives in Vienna. After Vienna, Graz is the second most populated city. Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck come in order according to the statistics. Most of the cities feature a population of less than one lack. Most Austrians are of German origin. According to the 2001 census, 88.6% is native German, while the remaining 11.4% speak minority languages.The country is the melting pot of diverse culture and creeds. The diversity of the country is reflected in its culture and religion. The diversity of geography makes it a multicultural and multi ethnic nation.
The northern part is bordered by Germany and Czech Republic. Germany has immense influence on the population of the Austria. Around 90% of the total Population of Austria speaks German. Even German is the official language. The influence of Germany is vivid in the customs, traditions, fetes and culinary habits.

Hungarian, Slovenian and Croatian people are also included in the population. The states of Carinthia and Styria are mainly home to the Slovene people. Bundesland and Burgenland are inhabited by the Hungarian and Croatian. A few percentage of the total population comprises the non Austrians, among which the East Bloc nationals are predominating. The minority is constituted of the refugees from Yugoslav wars and the foreign workers. Among the total number of foreign workers, a good percentage speaks German. The minority group includes gypsies who are locally known as the Roma-Sinti. The mother tongue of around 88.6% of the total population is German, 2.3% is Turkish, 2.2% is Serbian, 1.6% is Croatian, 0.5% is Hungarian and 0.4% is Bosnian.

In the twentieth century, most of the Austrians were the Roman Catholic. Catholicism has immense influence on the religion of the country. After 1945, Austria has been declared a secular country. There are six major ethnic groups in this country. They include Croats, Hungarians, Czechs, Roma, Slovenes and Slovaks.
