The official currency of Austria is the Euro which is the official unit of money of the countries of European Union as well. Euro is the official currency of the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Cyprus, Austria, France, Germany, Finland, Greece, Luxembourg, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Portugal and Spain. The Euro is available as coins and banknotes. The European Central Bank and the Eurosystem are in charge of the issuing and supervising of the Euro.Earlier Schilling was the official unit of money in Austria. It was used in the period from 1924 to 1938 and from 1945 to 1999. One Euro is divided into a hundred cents. The bureaux de change or the Austrian currency converter is found in all the cities. Currency exchange can be done at the bank and money changers. Money exchange offices are also found in the airports and major city railway stations as well. These centers serve the visitors seven days a week. The easiest way to change the currency is from the ATMs which remain open round the clock.
The local currency of Austria, i.e. the Euro, has no restriction on import. But there are some restrictions on export of local currency. The foreign currency has a number of export restrictions though it does not have any import restrictions. The bank notes in Austria are issued in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500. Coins are available in the denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Cents respectively. Apart from the regular Euro, the Austrian Mint issues some gold and commemorative Euro coins.
Apart from cash, credit cards and traveler's checks are also accepted. Most of the luxury hotels, shopping centers, and trading houses and entertainment centers receive credit cards. But you should carry the Euro in case you are visiting the hotels or shops because these places do not accept credit cards.
